The #1 Best Thing To Eat For Good Sleep

It is time to bed the ancient notion that eating late in the night is unhealthy. Until you have healthy sleep snacks, having a bite at night will not increase your weight; in fact, eating the correct foods before sleep really can contribute to improving and restoring sleep! In particular, there is one food worth adding to your night-time spin, so that sheep count: kiwi fruit.

"While tried-and-true bedtime snacks like a warm and soothing mug of milk can help people unwind and get some restful sleep, I have found that one evening ritual that people are happy to stick to is to eat two kiwi fruits before they hit the hay," says Lauren Manaker, MS, RDN, LD, a registered dietitian and member of the Eat This, Not That! Medical Expert Board.

It may sound strange, but Manaker told us that the research is clear—it can truly work! This small tropical fruit can support better sleep. This is how:

"Kiwis contain naturally serotonin which might adversely affect the quality of sleep when the levels are low. In one study, the overall sleep and efficiency of the persons who ate two kiwi fruits one hour prior to bed were increasing for four weeks, "She explains. She explains.

This is not the only way you can sleep better if you eat kiwi. Manaker says the fruit is doing something else — the high level of fibre.

"Since kiwis contain fibre naturally, consuming them can also encourage saturation, helping you sleep without hunger in the night," Manaker explains.

That's right! That's right! If you consume some of the worst foods before your sleep—like foods that may induce acid reflux—throughout the night, it can actually be advantageous for you to eat the proper foods before your bed (like kiwi).

To be awarded? You acquire a portion of the fruit with the advice of Manaker, which only a small fraction of Americans do at present. Only one out of 10 persons in the USDA consume the recommended daily fruit consumption, which is only 2 cups.

Tonight, go to the supermarket and take a few kiwis to sleep better. You can eat it alone, slice it and mix it with some yoghurt, or even include it in a night smoothie!
